How the Crystal Quest Countertop Ceramic Water Filters Works
Stage 1: A 1-micron pre-filter captures suspended particles like sand, silt, and dirt.
Stages 2 and 3: KDF55 and KDF85 REDOX media reduces iron, mercury, chromium, other dissolved metals, and hydrogen sulfide (which causes a rotten egg odor). KDF media also inhibits the growth of scale, bacteria, algae, fungi, and other microorganisms through the filter.
Stage 4: An ion exchange resin pulls out heavy metals like lead and aluminum from the water.
Stage 5: Granulated activated carbon (GAC) removes chlorine, bad tastes and odors, pesticides, and synthetic chemicals linked to cancer risk (such as benzene and THMs).
Stage 6: A 1-micron post-filter pad removes any remaining particulate matter.
Stage 7: Water passes through the ceramic filter cartridge.
Ceramic filters are made of diatomaceous earth, a fine silica powder consisting of the cell walls of microscopic algae. The diatomaceous earth contains millions of pores that capture all contaminants larger than a water molecule, including microbial contaminants like cysts (cryptosporidium and giardia) and bacteria such as E. coli.
Ceramic water filters are popular in areas where microbial contamination is concern. Ceramic filters should be cleaned with hot water and soap and a brush or scouring pad approximately once a month to wash away the outer layer of contaminats. The ceramic filter can be cleaned up to 30 times before it needs to be replaced.
